Edinburgh Art Festival and Edinburgh Printmakers present newly commissioned work from Montreal-based artist Nadia Myre responding to the 200th anniversary of the Union Canal.

The project - across print, installation and sound - explores reference points spanning Scotland and Canada, migratory routes started on the canal, indigenous story-telling, archival research methods, pattern, prose and song. The artist's research began with the encounter of Tales Of Nanabozho in a local library in Montreal - a book published in 1964 by Scottish-born émigré Dorothy Marion Reid after moving to Canada, who recounts stories of Nanabozho, a prominent trickster character to the Anishinaabe*, provoking questions of authorship and voice reverberating into the present. As an Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, Myre's work brings to the fore the decolonial impulse inherent in the artist's practice, imprinting and entangling materials with meaning.

Sited alongside the Union Canal and In Gallery 2 of Edinburgh Printmakers, Myre's multi-sited project is one of three major commissions featured as part of EAF 2022.

The first presentation of Montreal-based artist Nadia Myre in Scotland, ‘Code-Switching and Other Work’ responds to the history of clay tobacco pipe production in Glasgow through photography, sculpture, sound and performance. As an Algonquin member of the Kitigàn-zìbì Anishinàbeg First Nation, Myre’s practice explores cross-cultural experiences and mediations as a strategy for recognising and reclaiming the contributions of indigenous arts and cultural production.

A by-product of the tobacco trade with the so-called New World, clay pipes were one of the first ‘disposable’ items to enter the market, purchased pre-stuffed with tobacco and the stems broken off incrementally as they were consumed. Described by Myre as ‘archaeological refuse,’ the pipe shards collected are skeletal, with a bone-like feel. Commissioned by Mother Tongue and Glasgow International 2018, Myre’s new work aims to decolonise the histories of these trade items, highlighting their shifting meanings. All objects in one way or another have a story to tell. But not all things willingly relinquish their stories. Or, they are hesitant, slowly reluctant to release whispers of their gossip, jokes, their trauma, or provenance, at risk of their secrets being unjustly subsumed within, or employed in the service of, particular narratives, particular formulations of power. Withholding is their right, I think. And too often that right is violated. Such tensions between objects, narrative, and power thread Nadia Myre’s recent body of work, Code Switching [confirm title]. 

Formally, Code Switching is a series of images of equivocal cylindrical objects—less shiny than something nacreous or opalescent, but strangely able still to evoke some kind of iridescence despite their matte surface—arranged in various permutations against an unwavering black backdrop, as well as a sculptural work made of these same objects. Myre, a Montreal-based artist and Algonquin member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, is precisely attuned to the weight and knowledge that materials and objects hold, including these enigmatic ones.

These bead-like entities are in fact fragments of clay tobacco pipes, used once or twice then discarded—vanquished to the wet depths of the Thames, upon whose banks Myre and her son gathered the weather-worn remains. While these fragments might hold stories of sailors docking in London, first jolting smoke in months, or the last indulgence of those preparing to depart on a long journey—a deeply colonial and perhaps unduly romantic narrative of the sea and its conquering—deeper in their ivory and grey-tinged textures is a longer story, one of colonial plundering and tobacco trade routes, the wholesale stealing of Indigenous resources and traditions, imported from the so-called New World (which was only in fact new to Europeans) to England and Europe as early as the 16th century. The fragments speak of the industrialization of Europe, and the mass production of consumer goods, and the matching mass import of resources taken from across the Atlantic, all capitalist processes whose acceleration has now disenfranchised millions of people, not to mention jeopardized the stability of our fragile global ecology. This is the narrative that Myre allows to live and breathe through the works in Code Switching. Her arrangement of the pipe pieces recalls in turn Indigenous regalia, ceremonial offerings, and bone fragments; her stewardship of these objects is a powerful reclaiming of narrative and tradition, a restitution—not bestowed by those who perpetrated such violence, but rather sought and obtained by the artist herself—made more poignant by the inaugural presentation of this work being situated in Europe.

I think of Myre and her son sauntering along the bank of the Thames together, picking up washed up pipe remnants half buried in the rocks or sand or mud, likely amid some litter and other weird dross of the city. Maybe it was sunny that day, but probably not because it’s London. In any case, that’s not my story to tell, but hers, and her son’s. Just as the story of these pipes lives uneasily or irresolutely in these words. Their story is best told by them; Code Switching is Myre’s generous building of a venue fit for the telling of such stories.

Nadia Myre’s deep respect for and commitment to the act of making things by hand is evident throughout this exhibition. Balancing ancestral and contemporary methods of working, her practice is informed by shared family, social, and community knowledge and engages museum practices and academic research. Balancing Acts explores the politics of identity and belonging through a poetic, feminist backdrop of craft, care, and resilience. 

Myre is a Montreal-based artist of mixed Algonquin and French Canadian heritage. A member of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg First Nation, she draws attention to the power and histories of Indigenous textile practices. Throughout her 25-year career, Myre’s methodology has honoured a range of media that actively, yet subtly, engage with the material and the non-material. Through beadwork, textiles, photography, audio, video, and sculpture, she speaks to pressing issues of human interactions, environmental change, and cultural production.

Balancing Actsis a survey of artwork made over the last ten years. The exhibition is curated by Sarah Quinton and organized by the Textile Museum of Canada

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) is presenting the first survey exhibition of the Quebec Indigenous artist NADIA MYRE: TOUT CE QUI RESTE – SCATTERED REMAINS. It features the Canadian premiere of Code Switching, a series Myre produced during an artist residency at the Darling Foundry, sponsored by the MMFA, in 2016 - 2017. The exhibition includes some twenty works – photographs, sculptures and videos – created between 2000 and 2017. It is part of Woman. Artist. Indigenous., a season at the Museum devoted to female Indigenous artists.

Nadia Myre is a member of the A lgonquin First Nation of Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg. In her works, she revisits official history and the political and social struggles of Indigenous peoples. She judiciously juxtapose s her personal experience with that of others, creating highly symbolic works that spark contemplation and reflection. She takes a participatory approach and tackles topics of identity, language, desire and memory. The works in the exhibition attest to the encounter between Indigenous peoples and Europeans. Her works are offered as invitations to contemplation, reflection and reconciliation.
